The beach is New Zealand’s favourite playground, but it can also be a dangerous place. Here are some tips to keep us safe, not just in summer, but all year round:
- Wear Appropriate Beach Attire … street clothes get heavy when wet and can pull you under the water as well as restricting your movement.
- Use Safe and Correct Equipment … for example make sure the leash on all surf and body boards is secure and in good repair.
- Be Sun Smart … Slip, Slop, Slap, and Wrap! Slip into some shade between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00pm. Slop on plenty of SPF 30+ sunscreen. Slap on a wide-brimmed hat. Wrap on a pair of good quality sunglasses.
- Always Swim Between The Flags … If you are swimming at a beach without patrol flags showing, and you are unsure, don’t go in the water! Always enter shallow water feet first. Don’t go into the water after drinking alcohol, or if you are cold or tired. Learn about recognising hazards such as rips, holes, and dangerous waves.
- Lifeguards Rule The Surf! … Always listen to advice from lifeguards; pay attention to all warning signs, and keep an eye out for young children. Always swim with others, and be considerate and aware of other surf users.
